Flag and Pride Day Heritage

A home for the history. Credit for its makers.

BiNet is a historical home of organizing associated with the original bisexual pride flag and Celebrate Bisexuality Day. We honor that connection by naming people and preserving sources.

The original bisexual pride flag

Michael Page introduced the pink, purple, and blue bisexual pride flag in 1998. Accounts from organizers describe Wendy Curry and Gigi Raven Wilbur helping promote it. The broader visual history also includes Liz Nania's earlier overlapping-triangle work.

We use heritage language to describe organizing and stewardship. This page does not claim the original flag is exclusively owned by the current project, impose a license, or adjudicate the later controversy.

Celebrate Bisexuality Day

First observed in 1999, Celebrate Bisexuality Day was organized by BiNet activists Wendy Curry, Michael Page, and Gigi Raven Wilbur. September 23 remains the historical date associated with that organizing.

Pride Day, awareness-week organizing, and the flag are related histories, not interchangeable claims of authorship.

What stewardship asks of us now

  • Credit creators, organizers, contributors, and photographers.
  • Keep original sources and later interpretations distinguishable.
  • Do not present contested ownership or governance claims as settled fact.
  • Agree on permissions and compensation before commissioning new work.
  • Make room for corrections without erasing the people who built the movement.
