BiNet USA is the country's only grassroots national membership organization dedicated to building strong Bi communities and ending biphobia. The idea for BiNet was first brought forth at the March on Washington when dozens of Bi's from all over the country met at hotel room and collectively saw the need to end the stereotypes, the discrimination and the oppression of people behaving or identifying as Bisexual.
The seed bore fruit in 1990 at the National Conference on Bisexuality in San Francisco with the formal establishment of BiNet USA. Since then, BiNet USA has grown into a strong democratic organization with a voice heard in the press, on television, on Capital Hill, at conferences and in gay and lesbian organizations around the country. In 1995, BiNet applied for the 501c(3) status as a non-profit organization.
The goals of BiNet USA are clear:
- to Educate on the myths and realities of Bisexuality
- to Facilitate the development of Bisexual community
- to Work for the equal rights and liberation of all oppressed people
- to Reflect in organization and ideals that we strive for in the community at
large
- to Build a financially viable and stable organization
Because there is so much work still to be done before Bisexuals and all sexual minorities are able to participate fully, as an equal, in society.
Discrimination and oppression, both external and internal, are found every day. Together, working at a national and local level, organizations can have a great impact, whether it is educating, building communities or building financially viable organizations.
