FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In the wake of Christian leader Jerry Falwell's "National
Liberty journal"'s announcement that Tinky Winky, well-known purple Teletubby,
is gay, Bisexual activists are asking, "Why is it that so many leaders
of conservative Christian organizations are so obsessed with sex?"
"It would seem," said Heather Franek of BiNet USA , the nation's largest
Bisexual advocacy organization, "that some conservative Christian leaders
in this country think that everything on the planet is a sex object to
be either pursued or feared. As Bisexuals, we value sex but find
many other activities to enjoy in our lives, such as playing with our children,
making bread, going to work, and attending concerts and other cultural
activities. These leaders, by contrast, seem
obsessed with sex 24 hours a day, and feel a need to sexualize anything
that moves, even the puppet characters enjoyed by 2 year old children.
It would seem that they need help finding other activities to make their
lives whole."
BiNet USA's stance is that it fully supports Tinky Winky, regardless
of what his/her/zir sexuality may eventually be. "Why should
it matter?" said Alexei Guren, former National Coordinator of BiNet USA.
"As parents we love our children, and want them to grow up to be
compassionate and loving people. In some respects Tinky Winky is
much luckier than other children, playing with his other Teletubby
friends in their special magic land. He'll never have to deal with being
made fun of for the color of his skin, the way he dresses, or the bags
he chooses to carry. I only wish that real children could have the
same privilege in this country."
The truth is, purple doesn't make you gay. Neither does carrying
a purse, wearing unusual clothing, or demonstrating warm and loving
feelings for other Teletubbies. "Gay, Straight, Bisexual, Asexual,"
said Wendy Curry, newsletter editor of BiNet, "Tinky is the only one
who knows and he/she/zie is not talking. Until this happens,
BiNetUSA will continue to make no assumptions and support Tinky just
as we would any other 2-year-old child, regardless of the color of
their skin or the object of their affections."
BiNet USA would like to make itself available to any leader of a conservative/fundamentalist
religious organization who feels that s/he would like to "turn away"
from this obsession with sex and find other activities to indulge in so
that s/he no longer feels the need to sexualize puppet characters.
Courses are offered in quilting, computers, EBAH (Equality Begins
at Home) organizing, and play-dough sculpture. Counseling
is also available for those who feel they need extra help.
